Summer Art Workshops — Columbia Center for the Arts has an expanded selection of summer art experiences for young people of all ages. The Center, located at 215 Cascade Ave. in Hood River, has a variety of cool visual art and theater classes offered throughout the summer. Summer Art Camp, week-long day camps taught by Elizabeth Anderson and offered through Hood River Community Education, 9 a.m. to noon at Coe Primary building through the end of August. Kids ages 5-8 will learn to paint, print and tie-dye. Cost is $60 per week; supplies provided for most of the classes. To register call Community Ed, 541-386-2055.


Muddy Hands open studio clay class, Mondays at the Mount Hood Town Hall, 5-7 p.m.

Art-A-Day Exhibition  at Columbia Art Gallery,
featuring the works of five artists: Terrence Belunes, Ellen Dittebrandt (shown), Melinda Hannigan, Eric Jacobsen and Andrew Pate. Each artist will be debuting 30 new pieces that they created over the course of a month. The show will run through Aug. 1.


“Together,” works by Sorcha Meek, at SOLO Gallery. The large- and small-scale paintings include oil on canvas, images sewn with horse hair, and miniature works on tea bags depicting, evoking and exploring the concept of “together.”

“Recent Paintings and Monotypes” by Susan Sutherland at RE/MAX River City, 209 Third St., Hood River. The exhibit will run through Aug. 4.

July 28-31 — Hood River County Fair, at the fairgrounds, Summit Drive and Wy’east Road in Odell.
Gates open at 8:30 a.m. with 4-H and FFA activities. Exhibits and commercial booths open at noon. Carnival rides start at 1 p.m.

Aug. 2 — Summer tai chi at Wilson Park (east end of May Street), Mondays at 6 p.m., weather permitting. Tai chi and Qigong practice session: Share information, learn, teach. Guidance for newcomers will be available. Practitioners of all styles welcome. There is no charge for this community event.

Aug. 2-3 — Auditions for the comedy “Greater Tuna,” 7 p.m. at Riverside Community church, Fourth and State in Hood River. Needed are two men, 25-50, and two women, 25-50.  Performance dates are set for Hood River Middle School auditorium Nov. 26 and 27 with a matinee Nov. 28. The play will be directed by Lynda Dallman. Aug. 7 — Leos Club bottle/can collection, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Rosauers parking lot near the Lions newspaper recycling trailer. Monies raised from return deposit containers will be donated to various nonprofit groups in the community. Containers do not need to be sorted.

Aug. 24 — “Individualized Help from a Social Media Techie,” the last in the 2010 Brown Bag Lunch Series, “Social Media for Nonprofits: Essentials for Effective Use,” sponsored by Gorge Nonprofit Cooperative.
The workshops, held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at various locations, have been presented by Ash Sheppard, technology consultant.
