Three weeks have passed since the devastating
earthquake in
Haiti,
but local efforts continue to send help.
Horizon
Christian
School
raised $1,600 in the “Hoops for
Haiti”
event during basketball games on Saturday.
That included $350 from the concession sales,
with the remainder coming via pledges per point scored in the
boys and girls games. The boys won 45-10, while the girls lost
53-33.
At Parkdale Elementary, students raised
$305.76 for
Haiti
relief in January as part of the annual penny-collection
fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organization.
The Parkdale drive was already underway when
the earthquake hit, so the decision was made to send the money
to where it was needed the most.
“The event is a traditional favorite, but
because of the events in
Haiti,
the PTO thought this would be a good use of the money,”
Principal Kim Vogel said.
“At the end of the contest, we were able to
tell the kids where the money was going, and the response was
very positive. I think they felt they were making a difference,”
Vogel said.
Teams from kindergarten and grades 1-5
searched sofa cushions, car floors and purses, filling five
one-gallon jars with pennies.
The second- and third-grade team collected
the most money in the PTO-sponsored contest.
The money was donated to the American Red Cross for
disaster relief in
Haiti.
The second- and third-graders watched from the curb when
CenterPointe Bank sent its familiar red car to collect the
donations.
Other local
Haiti
relief efforts include:
n Cutie Pie Caring for Haiti Month:
Consignors at Cutie Pie Consignment in Mall 202,
202 Cascade St., are electing to donate
100 percent of their January and February proceeds to
Haiti.
Additionally, Cutie Pie Consignment will donate 10 percent of
each purchase to Haiti.
“Our goal is to raise $3,000 collectively.
Together we can make a difference,” said owner Erika Doring.
n Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort is adding a
special night to its operating schedule Monday, Feb. 15, to
raise money for Haitian relief efforts. The resort is offering a
special $10 lift ticket good from 3 to 9 p.m.
The ticket purchased online in advance
through the resort’s Web site will be donated to Mercy Corps’
Haitian relief efforts. Go to SkiHood.com/HelpHaiti.
The special night is being held on the
Presidents’ Day Monday holiday, when lifts usually close at 4
p.m.
“We hope the holiday, the special lift ticket
price of $10 (normally $25) and the great need of the Haitian
people will create a good turnout,” said Meadows spokesman Dave
Tragethon.
The resort will also be donating additional
proceeds and offering guests additional ways to contribute to
Haitian relief.
The resort has set up a fundraising page on
the Mercy Corps Web site:
