Laurence ‘Larry’ Jenkins

Laurence A. “Larry” Jenkins, age 81, died peacefully in his sleep with family by his side on Jan. 6, 2009. Also present was the family cat, who would not leave his side for days prior to his passing.

A gathering for family and friends will be Saturday, Jan. 17, from 4-7 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Larry was born on June 20, 1927, in Harvard, Ill., to Lauren and Mary Ingrid (Butts) Jenkins. Larry was proud of his heritage and told many stories of the family’s history with the town of Harvard. He always liked to note that his great-great-aunt, Franciece Butts, was the first white girl born in 1840 in Chemung Township prior to Harvard becoming a town.

He will be remembered for his love and caring for his entire family and for the fact that any simple word would trigger a song, even if he didn’t sing the correct lyrics.

Larry and his wife, Sue (Roberts), moved to Hood River, Ore., from Crystal Lake, Ill., in 1991 after his retirement from 42 years as a brakeman and conductor for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.

Larry is survived by Sue, his wife of nearly 35 years; his daughter, Rose (Jerry) Donahue, of Hood River; sons Laurence, of Hebron, Ill., John, of Odell, Ore., and Frank (Alison), of Marion, Mont.; brother, Charlie (Bev), of Harvard, Ill.,; and sister, Kathleen, of Capron, Ill. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Ivan and Brendan Donahue, Lauren (Brogan) Houtz, Jay Jenkins, and Laura and Connor Jenkins; a great-granddaughter, Emma Donahue, and many nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Larry will be remembered in a simple ceremony with the 10 a.m. Eucharist Service, Sunday, Jan. 18, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 400 11th St., Hood River.

Interment will be at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Harvard, Ill.

Contributions in Larry’s memory may be made to St. Mark’s Church or Hospice of the Gorge in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; (541) 386-1000.
